term courses
Term Courses are graduated ranging from beginners to advanced and run for 10 weeks. Students have the choice of 1.5 or 3 hour classes each week. These 10 week courses are independent programmes of study, yet they are designed so that students are able to progress systematically attaining higher levels of skill and confidence from term to term. Classes are offered at all levels each term, thus students are able to adjust the rate at which they learn by choosing when to follow on to the next level.
course content + method
At Lyceum we use the highly successful 'Communicative' method of teaching foreign languages. This is a carefully structured blend of conversational and theoretical approaches to language study. It includes the use of audio-visual material, role-play, cooking demonstrations and many other contemporary innovations.
We aim to ensure students can employ their knowledge of the language effectively in practical, real life situations both in writing and speech.
At the intermediate and advanced level the focus is specifically on strengthening conversation skills and cultural understanding by expansion of the courses into such fields of interest as literature, music, history, art and architecture, cuisine, politics, economics and social issues.
Elements of these disciplines are also incorporated in classes at the beginners levels.
national recognition
Lyceum is a nationally recognised training organisation through the government authority, the Office of Training and Tertiary Education. This means that the study you are doing can lead to a Certificate in Applied Language which you can use to improve your existing curriculum vitae, to present to current or prospective employers or for credit towards other qualifications at TAFE or University. Your course of study already complies with the requirements of this certificate and if you wish to become eligible to receive the certificate you need to complete the following level of study and undergo assessment.
- 39042QLD Certificate 2 in Applied Language correlates to the successful completion of Level 4 at Lyceum.
- 39043QLD Certificate 3 in Applied Language correlates to the successful completion of Lower Intermediate 2 at Lyceum.
- 39044QLD Certificate 4 in Applied Language correlates to the successful completion of Upper Intermediate 2 at Lyceum.
Some students may wish to try the assessment earlier or after
a longer period of study on the advice of their teachers. While
students study for whatever number of terms and hours per term
they deem appropriate, generally students need to study in small
groups for a minimum of 60 hours before seeking certification
at the next level.
Having completed the appropriate level of study, whether at Lyceum or elsewhere, students can choose to undertake an examination on one of our designated examination days.
There are two such days per year, one at midyear and the other at the end of the year. The examination will have both a written and oral component; the written component will take 3 hours and the oral component 15 minutes.
If you have any further queries please phone. We look forward to meeting you when classes commence.
